A new film that seeks to unveil the atrocities being committed against women in Islamic societies has been released.  HONOR DIARIES, co-produced by Women’s Voices Now, the Aha Foundation, Karma Nirvana, Council of Muslims Facing Tomorrow, and Clarion Project, profiles 9 Muslim women and their experiences living in a culture where practices such as female genital mutilation, honor violence, honor killings and forced marriage at young ages are part of tradition.  It also delves into the efforts being made by women to battle these injustices.

The groundbreaking documentary, which was awarded the St. Louis International Film Festival Interfaith Award and was an official section at the Chicago International Film Festival, is being challenged by pro-Islamic groups.  A recent screening of the movie at the University of Michigan, Dearborn was successfully shut down by CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) after it proclaimed HONOR DIARIES is “Islamaphobic.”  But churches, schools, and women’s groups continue to host screenings in an effort to address the issue of violence perpetrated against women in Muslim societies head on.

The muslim student association at LSU –

raising awareness or raising terrorists?

Last fall, in an article published by the LSU Reveille, the president of the Muslim Student Association, Hanif Soysal, proclaimed that the purpose of the organization’s presence on campus is to raise awareness and that its first goal is “to build a group that can focus on outreach and service.”  But in a follow up to the story, Chris Holton of ACT for America, presents evidence that the MSA is no benign fraternal campus organization but rather one with an alumni of dangerous characters and history of radicalizing students.  He warns that we should not turn a blind eye to this group.

The old saying “You never know what goes on behind closed doors” has a whole new meaning today for folks living in small town Broussard, Louisiana, after a resident there with dual citizenship was charged with attempting to smuggle weapons and ammunition hidden in a piece of furniture to his home country of Lebanon.
