Bird Watching

By Sarge

For the last thirty years I’ve been an active bird watcher. When I got started I was a little put-off by the variety of birds and the similarity of some specific species available to watch. There are a lot of different variants: colors, sizes, social actions, different calls and the displays of true diversity of mating rituals. They hope to accomplish what they want most: their personal satisfaction so they can produce progeny and continue the bloodline.

My favorite areas of observation are right here: West Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee and Iberville as well as Baton Rouge. I was in Baton Rouge on Monday the March 29, 2010 when I witnessed an annual migration. It was the nesting of the Loons. They do this at the State Capitol.

While citizens of this state were on the steps trying to advise the legislators of their dissatisfaction concerning business as usual, the Puff-Breasted Posturing Politicos preened, waltzed and  strutted past the people as though oblivious to the citizenry. The Puff-Breasted Posturing Politico expects automatic recognition of its position in its hierarchy and seeks to share this with the rest of the community.

These birds expect admiration. They believe they’re due this respect because they are who and what they are. This is witnessed by the shallow disdain and ignorance of the people they strut past without so much as a glance while moving toward their watering holes and suet beds to feed on the gains received from those people they ignored moments before. They thrive on the civility and deference displayed by the docile watchers.

Everybody knows birds are necessity for the continuation of the world. They help pollinate ideas and spread the biological elements necessary to bring the flower of government to life. But lately, there’s been more and more pollution injected into the garden’s produce.

Take, as an example, the mutant strain of genetic dysfunction offered by the Big Headed Time Waster Dorseiana (tempo grande capo d'acqua Dorseiana). It is this strange bird’s goal to spend some of the millions dedicated to producing good pollination (beneficial to the entire garden) by offering up for consideration, two (2) specific injections of less than essential standard.

This bird wants to declare an official State Cookie. It’s the germinal goal to state, declare, publish and debate the benefits of the TEA CAKE as official cookie of the State of Louisiana. It takes an act of the legislature to choose a cookie? Time meant for the advancement and betterment of a species is to be spent debating the relative merits of one cookie over another? What happens when competitive elements of the Pastry and Condiment lobbies try to infiltrate the gene pool? Could it lead to social anarchy?

This is considerably more troubling when you understand this same bird is trying to enter, by another mutant thought process and infusion of wrong-headed social contact ritual, another element detrimental to the developing progeny even though it is instantly beneficial to her personally. The Big Headed Time Waster Dorseiana (tempo grande capo d'acqua Dorseiana) wants to have it stated, declared, published and debated as to the benefits of allowing Campaign Funds to be used for the purchase or rental of FORMAL WEAR.

It never occurred to me that the plumage the bird used to attract social interaction in its favor needed to be funded by the people least likely to use the goods. Does that mean this bird will feather a nest only she can use? Must the rest of the flock accommodate this self-serving “preen queen”?

Yes. Bird watching is a wonderful pastime. It’s educational and enlivening as you observe the sometimes less than intelligent antics of your feathery friends in action. At other times it’s heartbreaking to witness the “stupid pet tricks” they perform with the expectation of suffering NO consequences.

You need to keep your “heads-up” attitude and watch these birds. The Loons have landed. Loon Poo-poo covers the steps of the Capitol. It’s wherever they walk. If you don’t pay attention you could step in it and have a bigger mess than you already have.
